چکیده
This paper examines three subtypes of the verb copying construction in Chinese. We begin by looking at Cheng’s (2007) analysis of the resultative verb copying construction, according to which both standard movement and sideward movement are required to account for the verb copying construction (VCC). Cheng suggests that the same analysis can be applied to verb copying with nonresultative phrases; this paper explores this claim by examining in greater detail two other subtypes of the VCC (verb copying involving manner phrases and duration/frequency phrases), looking at some differences between VCCs containing indefinite NP objects and those containing definite NP objects. In the context of the definite/indefinite object asymmetry, we discuss whether both types of movement are in fact motivated; that is, we examine whether both standard and sideward movement are required for a unified analysis of all subtypes of the VCC in Chinese.

Non-Referential Verb Use in Chinese: A Unified Verb Copying Analysis
This paper examines issues related to transitivity in Chinese, looking in particular at verb use in non-referential contexts. Four variants of non-referential verb use involving generic bare nouns and postverbal manner adverbs are analyzed. It is suggested that in these cases of non-referential verb use, the verb is first merged with an adverbial complement, and then copied to yield the verb co...
متن کاملTransfer Effects in the Production of Non-Referential Verb Phrases by Heritage Speakers of Chinese
Previous studies on bilingualism have focused on the more salient effects of the first language (L1) on the second language (L2). This study looks at the effects of the L2 on the L1 by comparing two language dominance groups in their production of non-referential verb phrases. Data from the two language dominance groups are compared, yielding an examination of the kinds of transfer effects that...
متن کاملWhen You Can and Can’t See Double: Revisiting Focus Doubling in ASL
In this paper, we examine the emphatic focus doubling construction in American Sign Language (ASL) and Brazilian Sign Language (Libras), in which one element of the sentence appears in its base-generated position within the sentence and one copy appears in sentence-final position. We review the existing focus doubling data in the literature, as well as a previous syntactic analysis of the const...
متن کاملEnglish-speaking preschoolers can use phrasal prosody for syntactic parsing.
This study tested American preschoolers' ability to use phrasal prosody to constrain their syntactic analysis of locally ambiguous sentences containing noun/verb homophones (e.g., [The baby flies] [hide in the shadows] vs [The baby] [flies his kite], brackets indicate prosodic boundaries). The words following the homophone were masked, such that prosodic cues were the only disambiguating inform...
متن کاملSidewards without copying
A traditional movement step relates a single source position to a single c-commanding target position, and never moves an argument to another argument position. But head movement involves non-c-command relations, and control relates two argument positions that are not always in a c-command relation. Special mechanisms could be invoked for these things, but a different strategy slightly generali...
